This a great fly that works well in early spring, to early summer. It has colors in common with the hare’s ear nymph, but the Whirling Dervish incorporates a dense color of natural rabbit fur, which gives it lots of movement in the water. The fox fur also adds some durability to the fly. The fish seem to like the movement and colors. Tie in sizes 12-16.
Hook: Any wet fly hook, sizes 12-16
Thread : Clear Mono
Bead: Silver Nymph-Head FlyColor™ brass bead
Tail: Coq de Leon Fibers, or any long mottled fibers
Body : Gold Bill’s Body Braid
Underwing : Grey Fox Tail Fur
Overwing: Red Fox Tail Fur
Collar: Natural Rabbit Fur
Place the bead on the hook and add CDL Tail.
Add Gold Body Braid.
Add a small amount of Light Natural Grey Fox Tail, don’t extend the fox past the end of the tail.
Place a small amount of Red Fox on top of the Grey Fox to top off the wing. Again, don’t extend past the tail.
Form a dubbing loop, and add a small amount of natural rabbit to the loop. Wrap the twisted dubbing loop at the front of the wing, and behind the bead. Stroking the fibers back toward the tail as you wrap the dubbing loop. Whip finish and cement the wraps.
