Since inception in 2008, Flymen Fishing Company has firmly focused on introducing ”next generation” fly fishing products and materials into the market as well as designing innovative flies for use in both fresh and saltwater environments.

Under the Nymph-Head® brand we manufacture and distribute several advanced ranges of nymphing related products with some exciting, groundbreaking materials and fly ranges currently under development for release during 2013.

The Fish-Skull® family of fly tying materials have been specifically designed for tying next generation freshwater and saltwater streamer fly patterns. Quick-and-simple to tie with, these latest innovations in fly tying materials offer fly fishermen some exciting alternatives.

The following timeline showcases the visionary products invented and first introduced by Flymen Fishing Company into the fly fishing marketplace:

January, 2008

The Nymph-Head® Bead

Innovation =  The Nymph-Head® design significantly improved the traditional, round fly tying bead by:

  • Adding a set of molded, 3D “nymph eyes” in order to create a more realistic fly profile.
  • Developing Chromax™, an anodized coating technology that for the first time allowed fly tying beads to become available in a wide range of vibrant, scratch-resistant new colors.
  • Using 20% more tungsten material to greatly improving the sink rate of the fly.

Game Changer =  Prior to the introduction of the Nymph-Head® bead, fly tying beads had largely remained unchanged since the early 1980’s when they first became popular as a way to tie weighted, nymph patterns. They were plain, round beads that due to the limitations of the only technology available at the time (electro-plating) were predominantly gold, sometimes copper or silver in color. The only colored beads available at the time were “painted beads” notorious for poor quality and the paint easily chipping off.

The Nymph-Head® bead allowed fly tiers to improve the profile of their flies and maximize their creativity by finally “moving beyond the standard gold bead.”

The Fish-Skull®

Innovation =  The Fish-Skull® design introduced a new, effective and simple way to tie weighted streamer fly patterns. Innovative features include:

  • A metal baitfish head with a realistic profile, an integrated “weighted keel,” and 3D eye sockets.
  • An innovative slotted head, providing a front-fitting method of tying streamers.

Game Changer =  Prior to the introduction of the Fish-Skull®, the predominant materials used for many years to tie weighted streamers were either metal dumbbells, cones or lead wraps. These were tied onto the hook first and the materials afterwards. The Fish-Skull® not only offered a new, more realistic looking material with innovative design features, BUT also a completely new technique of tying weighted streamers. The “front fitting” technique allows fly tiers to tie the material first and fit the Fish-Skull® last. This quick-and-simple method of tying streamers removed much of the complexity from the tying process making it significantly easier for novice fly tiers to create good-looking, very effective streamers. This ease of tying has helped to accelerate the growth in popularity in streamer fishing in recent years.

The success of the Fish-Skull® led to the development of the popular Fish-Skull® Sculpin Helmet (launched in August, 2011).

The Fish-Skull® Articulated Shank

Innovation =  The Articulated Shank design was a simple idea–a metal hook shank with a loop at the end that vastly simplified the tying of articulated flies.

Game Changer =  The Fish-Skull® Articulated Shank introduced a new material and technique that simplified some of the existing tying methods (and reduced time) needed when tying articulated streamers.  Previously, the accepted technique used to create a single hook articulated streamer was to first “sacrifice a hook” (by cutting off the back of the hook at the bend) in order to get a hook shank. An articulated “joint” was then created by tying a complex mono loop, beads and hook “system” onto the hook shank. The Articulated Shank eliminated this whole step by allowing the rear hook to be directly connected to the shank making it quicker-and-easier for even novices to tie articulated flies and has helped to enable the trend towards articulated flies in recent years.

The success of the Articulated Shank led to the development of a new style shank specifically for tying Intruder-style and other modern steelhead & salmon flies. The Fish-Skull® Senyo’s Articulated Shank (launched in August, 2012) is simple and easy to tie with, features a traditional loop-up eye and is available in vibrant anodized colors.   This was followed by the development of Chocklett’s Articulated Big Game Shank–designed specifically for “predator” style flies–which was launched in June, 2013.

Fish-Skull® Living Eyes

Innovation =  Flymen developed a new manufacturing technique that combines hi-resolution photographs of actual baitfish eyes with the latest in photo-realistic holographic technology to create the most realistic range of 3D fish-eyes on the planet.

Game Changer  =  The Fish-Skull® Living Eyes raises the bar and sets a new industry standard for realism, quality and price-point for 3D eyes. No longer will fly tiers have to rely on old style fish eyes created using an “artist’s impression” of what they think fish eyes look like.

The Nymph-Head® Wiggle-Tail Shank for Trout Flies

Innovation =  A purpose-designed wire shank that eliminates the old technique where a fly tier had to “sacrifice a hook” to get a shank in order to tie an articulated style of trout flies.

Game Changer  =  The Wiggle-Tail Shank provides a new, simple solution to an old problem by offering fly tiers the convenience of a single material flexible enough for a wide range of wet and dry wiggle-tail trout flies in different sizes. It raises the general awareness of a previously little known fly tying technique and helps bring the wiggle-tail style of flies into mainstream fly tying.

Fish-Skull® Articulated Big Game Shank

Innovation = A heavy wire shank designed for specifically for large, predatory flies.

Game Changer  = Based upon the original Articulated Shank created by Flymen Fishing Company in 2011, the Articulated Big Game Shank is optimized for both strength and fly length.

Fish-Skull® Fish-Mask

Innovation = An ultra-lightweight Fish-Skull® designed for tying weightless streamers that suspend in the water column.

Game Changer  = The Fish-Mask™ with its front fitting technique is quick-and-easy to tie with, and offers a simple, effective alternative to using 5-minute or light-hardening epoxies to create streamer heads.

Fish-Skull® Fish-Spine

Innovation = The Fish-Skull® Articulated Fish-Spine is a system of interconnected, articulated shanks that combine to form a multi-jointed, “fish spine” upon which incredibly animate and realistic baitfish patterns can be tied.

Game Changer  = By daisy-chaining a series of articulated shanks, you can impart incredibly realistic action into baitfish patterns that has until now been impossible to achieve.

Nymph-Head® Evolution™ Beadhead

Innovation = Nymph-Head® Evolution™ is a family of tungsten fly-tying beads molded in the natural shape, size and colors of the heads of the three most common aquatic insects that trout feed upon and which fly fishermen attempt to imitate, namely mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies.

Game Changer  = Moving beyond the traditional round bead … the Nymph-Head® Evolution™ beadhead allows fly tiers to tie nymphs that not only sink quickly, but have a more anatomically correct profile and head-size relative to the insect’s body.

Fish-Skull® Fly Tester

Innovation = The Fly Tester™ is a complete out-of-the-box solution for fly testing and demonstration that fills a key gap in the traditional process of developing a successful fly:  DESIGN → TIE → TEST → CATCH FISH

Game Changer = The Fish-Skull® Fly Tester™ enables fly tiers to “swim-test” and, ultimately, design better fly patterns.  It also provides fly shops, outdoor retailers, and commercial fly companies with a compelling way to demonstrate flies to their customers.
