Steve Wascher

Steven Wascher caught his first trout at the age of 3 ½, on a dry fly no less.  Over the course of the past 48 years he has received a great deal of support from his family members both in regards to both fly tying and fly fishing.

A third generation tyer, Steve received basic instruction and guidance from his father at an early age.  Steve credits his grandmother for being an instrumental figure in regards to tying as she initially started tying during the latter years of the depression.

Steve is a well rounded tyer and enjoys a myriad of challenges at the vise.  While living just a double haul away from “Steelhead Alley”, Steve enjoys the challenges of creating unique nymph and wet flies for steelhead.

In addition to the great cold water fishery that surrounds Steve, he also enjoys tying flies for the diversified warm water arena.  Living on the banks of New York’s famed Chautauqua Lake have given Steve the opportunity to fish for a wide spectrum of warm water species.  Be it dredging a weedline for Smallmouths or Walleye or skittering the surface for Largemouth or panfish gives Steve a great opportunity in which to create and test his patterns.

Over the course of the past decade and a half, Steve has been pursuing Muskie on the fly.  This is without question one of the greatest freshwater challenges .  Casting for hours on end without a look, and then suddenly, without notice, your own personal “Super Bowl” is attached to the end of your line.  While fishing for Muskie is a unique challenge, creating flies that will consistently attract them is a huge challenge of and in itself.

During the summer months, Steve guides for a wide range of warmwater species.  In addition to guiding and tying flies, Steve enjoys writing articles as well.  His articles and flies have appeared in Hatches Magazine, Mid -Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide, and American Angler.
